Controls Engineer

3-5 Years of Similar Experience Required

Primary Purpose of Position:

To supervise, manage, and maintain controls on existing and incoming machinery. The controls engineering will support personnel from maintenance/engineering and other teams in resolving issues with equipment to facilitate production and promote continuous improvements.

  • Developing and implementing control solutions to achieve greatest productivity in integrated cells, relating to the productions and quality assurance of parts, information systems, and equipment documentation. Managing and developing electrical and control systems with circuits ranging from high voltage AC to low voltage DC.
  • Technology Improvements: Investigation and development of new technologies. Continually improving machine up time and operability. Supporting all teams within the manufacturing facility, providing technical expertise, and demonstrating leadership. Integrating Die Cast cell knowledge to obtain operational improvements. Upgrade and update equipment electrical drawings and control program files.
  • Safety: Maintaining a safe working environment by addressing safety issues, keeping up on current legislation and safety requirements. Performing risk analysis.
  • Control: Controlling solutions for new and existing equipment defined, developed, monitored, and installed. Oversee programming changes, communication changes and coordinate for consistency. Panel documentation/labeling and tracking of changes up to date. Controls new technology training for maintenance. Cohesiveness in maintenance (i.e. projects, going in same direction). PDR/Health & Safety sign off's done in conjunction with outside Engineers.
  • Specifications: Strong troubleshooting ability relating to automated production equipment.PLC programming to include experience with ladder logic and structured text languages. Experience with Beckhoff controls and TwinCAT 2/3 software would be considered and asset. HMI programming experience to include Wonderware 8. Experience teaching and modifying spot weld and mig weld robot programs. Robotic experience with Kuka KRC4 controllers and work visual software will be considered an asset. Strong knowledge of resistance welding utilizing both AC and mid frequency DC weld control. Understanding of pokeyoke/error proofing concepts. Industrial communication protocols to include Ethercat, Ethernet IP, Profibus and Profinet. Previous experience integrating peripheral field devices into existing systems. Modify weld parameters to resolve weld quality issues for both mig and spot weld processes.
  • Stock Room: Work with purchasing to properly implement new stock and remove obsolete stock items.
  • Other duties as required, including special projects as they arise.

Personal Competencies

  • Background in machine controls design, robotic controls, and programming
  • Must be willing to work “hands on” in the manufacturing area, be highly motivated, be able to work independently and as part of a team with flexible hours
  • Strong understanding in production and troubleshooting an asset
  • Must show strong interpersonal skills, written and verbal communication skills, leadership skills, initiative, self-discipline, computer skills, and time management skills
  • Significant project management experience
  • Flexible in scheduling and “on call” availability
  • Be willing to carry company phone and use according to policy
  • Supply hand tools to perform various job tasks
  • Be familiar with the OH&S Act and Regulations
  • Familiarity with CSA and ANSI standards
  • Excellent Communication skills, both oral and written
  • Knowledge and adherence to relevant procedures and legislation
  • Able to travel on a periodic basis
