Role Purpose: Mechanical Designers (Automation) will be responsible for carrying out a variety of engineering duties including designing, researching, and prototyping new products/designs. The will find creative solutions to unique challenges, by designing custom automation machines. They will collaborate across departments on various design projects, using in-depth knowledge of the latest design trends and engineering software.

Reports To: Engineering Manager

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Designing, developing and enhancing electro-mechanical systems and devices for custom, non-standard equipment
  • Ensuring the system designs meet customer specification and are effectively manufactured/produced
  • Developing design documents for mechanical parts and final products
  • Work with manager and/or Project Manager to create project concepts and provide information that will assist in the initial quoting process
  • Generate design drawings, including designs components, mechanisms and systems for automation
  • Identifying areas of weakness in the production line or finished products and making recommendations for improvement
  • Acts as liaison with internal/external assemblers/manufacturers of equipment to ensure all parts are manufactured to design
  • Evaluate potential solutions to engineering problems for feasibility, manufacturability and cost
  • Ensure produced drawings/models/designs are up to current department standards within schedule and cost (hours) goals.
  • Create and maintain project/job documentation.
  • Utilize proprietary software as well as other engineering skills and knowledge to assure that work product meets design criteria and operating conditions.
  • Collaborate with engineering team and other departments (ex. Quoting, assembly, etc.)
  • Effectively work with vendors and customers.
  • Provide technical and engineering support for day-to-day processing, product development and process improvements.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Experience:

· Postsecondary degree or diploma in engineering or a related field

· 5+ years’ experience designing custom Industrial Automation machines

· Previous engineering experience, including good understanding of the following (an asset):

  • SoildWorks, SolidWorks PDM, AutoCAD, and 3D drafting
  • How design impacts manufacturing processes, machining, and production
  • Machine and fixture design
  • Welding, fabricating, and machining as it applies to design
  • Pneumatic, Hydraulic and Electrical systems as it applies to machine building and equipment

· Proficient computer skills, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Excel)

Experience:

  • Mechanical engineering: 5 years (preferred)
  • Industrial automation: 3 years (preferred)
