Dessert Holdings is a leading baked goods platform providing premium layer cakes, cheesecakes, brownies, bars, and other desserts to the retail in-store bakery ("ISB") and foodservice channels on a largely private label basis. We are looking for a Packaging Development Specialist for our London ON location to support existing business through packaging innovations and cost improvement projects. The successful candidate will liaise with purchasing, marketing, and production staff to deliver the best packaging solutions for our products. They will also work closely with suppliers and customers to deliver new packaging solutions as well as maintain the quality of existing materials. This position will also be part of the manufacturing team, supporting production packaging material and process needs and identifying and implementing improvements.

Key Technical Responsibilities and Contributions

• Plans and directs activities concerned with design and development of protective packaging
• Consults with purchasing, engineering and continuous improvement departments to determine feasibility of proposed packaging
• Develops dielines, specifications, samples, and written analyses of proposed packaging
• Advise employer or customers on efficient packaging procedures, innovations, and materials
• Perform change management to implement packaging and process improvements
• Fully understand both consumer and customer expectations of packaging for desserts and baked goods
• Maintain awareness of developments in the packaging industry
• Support product development throughout the new product process including plant trials
• Review and optimize current packaging materials with focus on standardization
• Identify opportunities to implement sustainable packaging materials and improve sustainability story of current packaging
• Work within platforms and processes to comply with regulatory and customer packaging requirements
• Balance innovation, sustainability, risk management, benefit, and cost
• Work closely with suppliers to support timely project implementation and quality control
• Organize and conduct trials for new packaging

Educational Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Science, or Diploma in Packaging Engineering

Experience Requirements:

Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience within a CPG company

Special Knowledge and Skills

Must have:

• Proficient with MS Office, CAPE
• Excellent verbal and written communications
• Strong understanding of packaging materials and supplier processes
• Technical competence in food packaging systems and packaging materials
• Self-motivated, ability drive packaging projects through the development process
• Able to travel as required to other Dessert Holdings facilities

Optional:

• Navision experience an asset
• Experience with operating or troubleshooting industrial packaging equipment an asset
