WHAT YOU WILL DO

 

  • The Purchasing Agent is responsible for the tactical procurement of commodities, supplies, equipment, and services to be used by the organization.
  • This individual will utilize expert knowledge to purchase goods and services at the most favourable price for the company, while simultaneously building and maintaining strategic relationships with key suppliers.
  • Reporting to the Purchasing Leader, the Purchasing Agent coordinates their efforts with various departments in order to maintain the appropriate level of inventory. This role also works closely with the Plant Manager to ensure timely control of maintenance items and ability to follow preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Prepare and administer bids, requests for quote, requests for proposal, requests for information, and other vendor documentation.
  • Procure and place orders for structural steel, MRO, goods, materials, and services for the organization in a timely and cost-effective manner.
  • Manage service level agreements, scope of work, and contract terms with service providers.
  • Research and survey buying markets in order to source the most optimal suppliers, in accordance with corporate objectives.
  • Remain abreast of pricing trends, changes, restrictions, or any other variables that could affect purchasing strategies.
  • Negotiate return of items to vendors and coordinate subsequent credits, refunds, or replacements.
  • Organize, coordinate, and periodically conduct vendor site visits.
  • Adhere to and update ISO purchasing policies and procedures, update SDS database and Product Data information as required.
  • Evaluate and manage existing vendor base by maintaining communications and relationships as well as completing vendor evaluations.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

 

  • A post-secondary education is required, preferably in a related field.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in a manufacturing purchasing role is necessary.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of purchasing and inventory control principles.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and staff to create a results-driven, team-oriented environment.
  • Must have strong organizational skills and a desire to take responsibility and to organize.
  • Must have excellent professional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in a computerized manufacturing accounting environment would be considered an asset (Visual Manufacturing).
  • Knowledge of Steel purchasing within a manufacturing environment, including an understanding of steel grades and specifications.
  • Knowledge and experience with warehousing and inventory control of Maintenance, Repair and Operating Supplies.
  • Understanding of construction schedules and commercial building construction would be considered an asset.
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office and ability to read blueprints.
  • Sound analytical thinking, planning, prioritization, and execution skills.
  • Exceptional customer service experience required.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to foster positive relationships with others.
