Health and Safety Specialist

About the job

As a member of our Human Resources team, you will be responsible for all aspects of the development and execution of the Occupational Health and Safety program. This position will focus on enhancing the overall health and safety of the workplace in compliance with OH&S legislation and applicable regulations.

Responsibilities Include

health & safety program

 
  • Responsible for the development and maintenance of Health & Safety policies and protocols to ensure compliance with OHS Act and its regulations and standards
  • Ensure compliance of TMI’s Health and Safety Program
  • Monitor safety data management monthly, quarterly, and annually.
  • Provide recommendations as to proactive preventative strategies related to workplace injury statistics
  • Develop, maintain, and facilitate H&S training programs
  • Acts as a resource for OH&S inquiries received from all departments
  • Provide expert Health & Safety advice and support as required
  • Participate as an active member of the TMI’s JHSC ensuring it operates effectively and in compliance with the OHSA
     
injury & illness prevention
 
  • Responsible for the development and implementation of injury prevention strategies and safety awareness initiatives
  • Responsible for conducting risk assessments in partnership with the JHSC.
     
accident & incident response
 
  • Review all incident reports, workplace inspection reports and initiatives necessary for corrective action implementation
  • Assess and resolve workplace health & safety concerns in collaboration with TMI Management.
     
disability Management
 
  • Maintain and ensure compliance with TMI’s Disability Management program.
  • Manage occupational injuries and illnesses through the entire process.
  • Provide professional guidance and support in all WSIB/WCB/CSST matters including appropriate return-to-work accommodations.
  • Follow up with return-to-work plans’ compliance.
  • Act as a resource for employees, supervisors, and managers related to work-related injury/illness claims.

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety legislation, including the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, etc.
     
Qualifications
 
  • Undergraduate degree in Occupational Health and Safety, or a related field of study
  • Certified Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation or in progress an asset
  • Certified First Aid/CPR.
  • 5 years of progressive work experience in Health and Safety including:
    • 3 years in an environment with Manufacturing, Warehouse and Laboratory and direct responsibility for occupational disability management .
  • Thorough working knowledge of relevant provincial Occupational Health & Safety legislation, Human Right Code of Ontario and Canada, and standards and guidelines
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of WSIB/WCB/CSST processes along with the Health & Safety Internal Responsibility system.
  • Understanding of workflow process analysis, incident investigation, and risk management principles
  • Conflict resolution and negotiation skills
  • Ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality.
  • Proficient with MS Office Applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams)
