Junior Network Support Specialist

 

Type of Employment: 9 Month Contract, which could lead to a full-time permanent position, office environment 

Start Date: Immediate 

Compensation: $24.00 - $29.00/hour and a competitive benefits package 

  • Wages will be reviewed pending training and growth within the department 
  • Starting wage may vary depending on previous relevant experience 

Hours:

  • 40 to 44 hours/week, Monday to Friday; some overtime and some weekends required
  • Participate in an after-hours on-call schedule rotation (evenings and weekends)
  • Occasional traveling will be required to assist with store openings or upgrades

Position Summary
The Junior Network Support Specialist position is responsible for assisting the Network Technician in building, configuring, maintaining and troubleshooting Canusa’s network and server infrastructure. This includes our Head Office, Order Desk, 48 Auto Parts Centres across Ontario, wireless and WAN network topologies. The Network Engineer is responsible for implementing and enforcing the company’s systems and network policies, proactively monitoring performance and providing resolution support incidents.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide help desk support for incoming requests via Service Desk ticket, telephone, chat and self-service portal
  • Prioritize, assign, and organize help desk service requests
  • Ensure the Service Desk ticketing system is accurate and up-to-date
  • Manage and maintain network hardware and software
  • Manage and maintain server topology
  • Manage and maintain desktop environments
  • Manage VMware operational architecture 
  • Upgrade, maintain, proactively monitor, and repair the server systems to maintain an acceptable level of uptime
  • Proposes and implements hardware and software upgrades 
  • Installation, configuration, maintenance and troubleshooting of various network components
  • Monitor and analyze the network for resiliency and performance
  • Understanding of Canusa’s and industry best practices and business requirements to gather data for analysis by conducting interviews and independent research
  • Fully resolve problems with Canusa systems and technologies (i.e. root cause analysis)
  • Participate in making decisions and determining actions independently and expediently to eliminate risks and ensure business continuity
  • Participate in DR and network security solution development
  • Actively pursuing new technologies to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of firm systems
  • Act to support all technical projects 
  • Determine and decide when to escalate problems to vendors and ensure resolution and reporting of resolution to stakeholders
  • Maintaining network documentation, processes, procedures, troubleshooting guides and change management logs

Required Skills and Abilities 
Core Knowledge Requirements

  • Wide Area Network transports, including MPLS
  • Telco (SIP) troubleshooting skills
  • Knowledge of common protocols such as SNMP, HTTP, HTTPS, SMTP, DNS, LDAP, KERBEROS, RADIUS and FTP
  • Install and configure server hardware and software, including upgrades and patches for Microsoft products and 3rd party applications
  • Monitor servers, application performance, and network problems/alerts using available tools
  • Experience with Active Directory configuration, planning, maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Experience with Windows network services (DNS, DHCP, NPS)
  • Experience implementing VMWare
  • Good working knowledge of enterprise security concepts and devices, including implementing and troubleshooting VPNs, managing Unified Threat Management appliances and/or IDS/IPS devices
  • Experience in supporting branch-level networks and systems with limited support at the remote end
  • Ensure compliance with security standards and policy
  • Enterprise-class routing protocols BGP, RIP
  • Converged Networks carrying voice, video and data
  • A fundamental understanding of VOIP telecommunications and networks
  • Router, switching and wireless hardware technologies.
  • Network monitoring and reporting tools
  • Use of network troubleshooting tools, including network sniffers
  • Business continuity and disaster recovery
  • Alerting, monitoring and response disciplines
  • Familiarity with endpoint security solutions

Function-Specific Systems Knowledge Requirements

  • WAN transports & Services
  • Routing & Switching hardware (Cisco, HP, Juniper, Fortigate)
  • VMware VCenter Server, ESXi
  • Microsoft 0365 Infrastructure (Nice to have)
  • Firewalls (FortiGate, Palo Alto, Cisco, etc.)
  • Enterprise Wireless 
  • VoIP Transport 
  • Windows Server topology
  • Active Directory
  • Network / Application tools (Compuware, Sniffer, Wireshark)
  • General Network (IP schema, Video, Cabling, DHCP)
  • Network Management and Monitoring tools 
  • Citrix (Nice to have)

 Required:

  • Typically, 1 to 2, or more years of experience
  • Demonstrable troubleshooting abilities
  • Strong understanding of technical networking
  • Strong Windows Server background
  • Strong planning and analysis skills
  • Strong documentation skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Valid G Drivers License and clean driving abstract 

 Preferred:

  • College or University degree or equivalent experience 
  • Cisco CCNA or greater or the ability to complete certification
  • Willingness and drive to learn new/different technologies 
  • Product and/or industry certifications (CCNA, CCNP, Network+, Security+ or equivalent certifications
  • Experience with converged enterprise networks in a multi-office environment
