Health & Safety Specialist
Maple Leaf Foods is embarking on one of the most exciting journeys in its history through the build and startup of a world-class, leading edge manufacturing facility producing premium, value added fresh poultry products. The new 660,000 square foot facility will call London, ON home and will employ over 1,600 employees as we ramp up operations over the next few years.

Snapshot of a Day-in-the-Life:
Reporting to the Health & Safety Leader, the Health & Safety Specialist will be responsible for the development, implementation and maintenance of the Company’s Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) programs, policies, systems and reports for the London Poultry Plant. This position will ensure legislative and Plant compliance with occupational health and safety by “on the floor” involvement with operations. This position will include but not limited to; assisting in the development of safe work procedures, training, claims management and assessing/controlling risk to reduce/eliminate accidents/incidents which cause personal injury and/or property damage. The goal of this position will be to standardize safe work methods and recognize high impact behaviours to achieve a world class health and safety program. The successful candidate will be involved in all Health & Safety activities related to the London Poultry Plant.As Health & Safety Specialist, you will:
- Consistent with our leadership values, act as a champion for our culture by participating in the development and execution of a positive and productive environment focused on the needs of our people.
- Assist in the identification and reduction of Health and Safety risks and hazard including on-the floor audits of practices and direct engagement with the operations teams.
- Develops and constructs Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and Safe Work Procedures (SWP) identifying the basic job steps and tasks and their associated hazards and risks and develops safe operating procedures and hazard controls.
- Assist in the identification and reduction of Health and Safety risks and hazards through risk assessments, Job Hazard Analysis, employee hazard reporting, etc.
- Maintain OHS metrics and documentation with the ability to present this information to applicable parties.
- Design and deliver training programs for workers, management and Safety Committee members to comply with legislative requirements and improve Health and Safety at the site.
- Review and monitor on-site Contractor OHS programs, including Contractor Compliance, and compliance with applicable regulations.
- Ensure records and documentation are kept protecting Company interests.
- Assists in ensuring compliance with corporate policies and legislative requirements.
- Assist in the development and communication of Occupational Health and Safety systems.
- Auditing of the On-the-Job Training program, including Job Hazard Analysis and Standard Operating Procedures.
- Promote a safe and healthy work environment and the reduction of lost time due to occupational injury or illness.
- Enhance Maple Leaf’s profile as a responsible and caring company.
What You’ll Bring:
- Post-secondary education in health and safety
- Knowledge of health and safety laws and legislation
- Knowledge of compliance and regulatory training of all personnel working onsite
- Reinforce company values
- Maintain positive relations with employees
- Strong communication, interpersonal, organization and analytical skills
- 1-3 years of experience in health and safety
- Experience in a leadership role, preferably within a food manufacturing environment
- Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety legislation combined with training in hazard recognition, assessment and control
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work with union and management personnel in a collaborative environment
- Self-starting, proactive individual who can work well independently and in a team environment
- Transparency in dealing with others
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Computer skills – proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word and Teams is required
- Enthusiasm for challenge and new initiatives
