Maple Leaf Foods is embarking on one of the most exciting journeys in its history through the build and startup of a world-class, leading edge manufacturing facility producing premium, value added fresh poultry products. The new 640,000 square foot facility will call London, ON home and will employ over 1,600 employees as we ramp up operations over the next few years.

A snapshot of some of the exciting things you will lead and do:

The Health & Safety Coordinator will work closely with the Health and Safety team to promote Occupational Health and Safety within the Maple Leaf Foods London site.  This involves providing technical support, training, implementation and maintenance of the programs for all employees and visitors to the site
 
  • Provides support to hourly and salaried staff by having a visible presence on the production floor, promotes safety plans, goals, objectives, measurements; and acts as a facilitator in the promotion of safety behavior programs;
  • Delivers occupational health and safety training to employees, such as, but not limited to: Safety Orientation for New Hires, WHMIS, Lock Out Tag Out, Accident Investigations
  • Assist in the identification and reduction of Health and Safety risks and hazards through risk assessments, Job Hazard Analysis, employee hazard reporting;
  • Aids supervisors in accident investigations, identifying root causes, reporting, documentation and follow-up, and initiates corrective actions with the departmental leaders;
  • Ensure that personal protective equipment, such as respirators, safety glasses, footwear and safety helmets are being used in workplaces according to regulations and that dangerous materials are correctly stored;
  • Monitors departmental safety meetings and Joint Health and Safety Committee meetings;
  • Works with the Joint Health and Safety Committee to inspect and test work areas for potential accident and health hazards and implement appropriate control measures;
  • Seeks continuous improvement to safety programs by assisting in monthly departmental safety inspections, periodic and annual audits, and the implementation of subsequent action plans;
  • Assists in ensuring compliance with Corporate policies and legislative requirements;
  • Assist in the development and communication of Occupational Health and Safety systems;
  • Auditing of the On-the-Job Training program, including Job Hazard Analysis and Standard Operating Procedures;
  • Promote a safe and healthy work environment and the reduction of lost time due to occupational injury or illness;
  • Assist in special projects and duties as required; and
  • Enhance Maple Leaf’s profile as a responsible and caring company.

What you will bring:

  • Post-secondary education in health and safety
  • Knowledge of health and safety laws and legislation
  • Knowledge of compliance and regulatory training of all personnel working onsite
  • Reinforce company values
  • Maintain positive relations with employees
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, organization and analytical skills
  • 1-3 years of experience in health and safety
  • Experience in a leadership role, preferably within a food manufacturing environment
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety legislation combined with training in hazard recognition, assessment and control
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work with union and management personnel in a collaborative environment
  • Self-starting, proactive individual who can work well independently and in a team environment
  • Transparency in dealing with others
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Computer skills – proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word and Teams is required
  • Enthusiasm for challenge and new initiatives
